How to Convert Time Zones Without the Headache

Anyone who works with people in other countries knows the small panic of picking a meeting time. Is 3 p.m. here a reasonable hour there, or is it the middle of the night? Time zones are simple in theory and surprisingly easy to get wrong in practice.

Why time zones trip us up

Two things make conversion harder than plain arithmetic:

  • Daylight saving time. Many regions shift their clocks by an hour for part of the year, and they don't all do it on the same date. So the gap between two cities isn't fixed โ€” London and New York are usually 5 hours apart, but for a few weeks each spring and autumn it's 4 or 6.
  • The date can change. When you convert across a big gap, the time can land on the previous or next calendar day. Tokyo is hours ahead of Los Angeles, so Monday morning in LA is already Monday night in Tokyo.

The reliable way to do it

Instead of counting on your fingers, anchor on one fixed moment and read it in both places:

  1. Pick the exact time in your city.
  2. Convert that same instant into the other city's local time.
  3. Check the date on the other side, not just the hour.

That third step is the one people skip โ€” and it's how a Friday call quietly becomes a Saturday one for your colleague.

How to use it

The Time Zone Converter does all three steps for you. Choose the two cities, set a date and time (or tap โ€œUse current timeโ€), and it shows the matching local time, the date there, and exactly how many hours apart the zones are โ€” with daylight saving already handled. Use โ€œSwap zonesโ€ to see the same moment from the other person's point of view.

A couple of habits that help:

  • Propose times in their local hours. Saying โ€œwould 9 a.m. your time work?โ€ is clearer than โ€œ3 p.m. mine.โ€
  • Double-check around clock-change season. Late March and late October are when offsets quietly shift.

If you're counting down to a specific launch or event, the Countdown Timer tracks the time remaining live, and the Date Difference Calculator tells you exactly how many days sit between two dates.
