Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?
BMI equals your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (BMI = kg / m^2). For example, a person who is 1.75 m tall and weighs 70 kg has a BMI of 70 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 22.9.
What do the BMI categories mean?
Using the common adult ranges, below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is in the obese range.
Does BMI work for everyone?
BMI does not separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people may read as overweight even when they are lean, and it is not designed for children, pregnant people, or the elderly without adjustment.
Is this BMI result medical advice?
No. This result is an estimate for general information only and is not medical advice, so please consult a doctor or other qualified professional about your weight and health.
