Frequently asked questions
- How is the tip amount calculated?
- Tip = bill x tip%/100, and the total is bill + tip. On a 60 bill at 18%, the tip is 60 x 0.18 = 10.80 and the total is 70.80.
- How does splitting the bill work?
- The tool divides the grand total by the number of people. A 70.80 total split among 3 people comes to 23.60 each.
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- Either is common, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional approach. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer in the bill field and the percentage applies to that.
- What is a standard tip percentage?
- In the United States, 15 to 20% is typical for sit-down service, with 18% a common default. Norms vary widely by country, so adjust the percentage to local custom.
