Frequently asked questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?
Tax = net price x rate/100, and the total is net price + tax. A 50 item at an 8% rate has 4 in tax for a 54 total.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Net price = total / (1 + rate/100). From a 54 total at 8%, the net price is 54 / 1.08 = 50, so the tax included was 4.
Why is removing tax not just subtracting the percentage?
Because the percentage was applied to the smaller net price, not the larger total. Subtracting 8% of 54 would over-remove the tax, so you must divide by 1.08 instead.
What sales tax rate should I use?
Rates depend on your country, state, or city, and some places combine several rates. Enter the combined rate that applies to your transaction for an accurate result.
