This GPA calculator turns your course grades and credit hours into a weighted grade point average on the standard 4.0 scale. Because it weights each course by its credits, a heavier class counts more toward your final number than a lighter one. Enter each course, its grade, and its credit hours to see your cumulative GPA.
How to use the GPA Calculator
- Add a row for each course you are taking.
- Select or enter the letter grade for each course.
- Enter the credit hours for that course.
- Read your weighted GPA, which updates as you add or change rows.
Frequently asked questions
- How is a weighted GPA calculated?
- Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those products, then divide by the total credit hours. The formula is GPA = sum(grade points times credits) divided by sum(credits).
- Can you show a worked example?
- Say you earn an A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class. That is (4.0 times 3) plus (3.0 times 4), which is 12 plus 12, equals 24, divided by 7 total credits, giving a GPA of about 3.43.
- What grade points map to common letter grades?
- On a 4.0 scale, A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0, and F is 0.0. Plus and minus grades usually shift the value by about 0.3 (for example, B+ is 3.3 and A- is 3.7).
- Why does a weighted GPA differ from a simple average of grades?
- A simple average treats every course equally, but a weighted GPA gives more influence to courses worth more credits. A strong grade in a 5-credit course pulls your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course.
